Statement on the Extraordinary Congress of the Somali National Union of Healthcare Workers (SONUH)

The Somali National Union of Healthcare Workers (SONUH) successfully convened its Extraordinary Congress, bringing together delegates and representatives of healthcare workers from across Somalia to discuss the future direction of the union, strengthen organizational structures, and reinforce the commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of healthcare professionals.

The Congress served as an important platform for dialogue, unity, and democratic decision-making within the union. During the session, delegates reviewed the union’s activities, discussed key challenges facing healthcare workers, and adopted resolutions aimed at improving working conditions, strengthening professional development, and enhancing the protection of healthcare workers’ rights.

One of the key outcomes of the Extraordinary Congress was the democratic election of new leadership to guide the union in the coming term. The Congress elected the following officers:


President: Ms. Hamdi Hashi

1st Vice President: Abdi Dhiblawe

2nd vice President: Yasmin Ali

Secretary General: Abdikani Yasin

Deputy Secretary General: Ayanle Mohamed

Treasurer: Maha Dahir

The newly elected leadership reaffirmed its strong commitment to advancing the interests of healthcare workers, promoting social dialogue, and strengthening cooperation with national and international partners in the health sector.

SONUH remains dedicated to advocating for decent work, improved healthcare systems, and the protection of healthcare workers who play a vital role in serving communities across Somalia.

The union also reaffirmed its commitment to solidarity with healthcare workers globally and to strengthening partnerships with professional and trade union organizations in Africa, the Arab region, and beyond.
